One of the reasons it took so long for me to make this decision was that I was so confused about the differences between banks and credit unions and after a lot of research I found that there really is not one - in fact, some credit unions (like BECU) are better than banks. They offer better service, fewer to no fees - and get this - BECU pays ME to keep my money with them. Who needs "free" checking at a bank where you get no interest when you can get really FREE checking at a credit union with a lot of interest. To put things in perspective when I was at my old bank I got no interest on my "Free Checking" account and .10% interest on my savings. I now get 6% interest on both my checking and my savings for balances up to $500 and .25% and .50% interest respectively after that. Life is good.
To make things even better BECU offers a ton of other stuff my bank either did not have or did a really poor job of maintaining - such as the new mobile banking offer. I can now check my account balance, view my transaction history, transfer funds, pay bills, and make BECU loan, credit card and line of credit payments right in the palm of my hand - again, FREE. It makes my life super convenient and is something my old "bank" did really poorly.
If your in Washington State you need to ditch your bank and get with a credit union (like BECU) - they are free to join, make the switch EASY, and you get a ton of benefits (like interest on your money). You can also enjoy sticking it to the man which, by the way, is SO SEATTLE.
