New Ideas for Seattle

New Ideas for SeattleNew Ideas for SeattleAh, Seattle. I ‘m so happy to be living in a progressive (at least for this country) city. As new mayor Mike McGinn makes his way into office, results are coming back from the esteemed citizens of this fine city about what Seattle needs to do in order to become the kind of city that we would like to be.

The Seattle Post Globe recently listed the top twenty.  I’m not going to give you the full list, but might instead expand on some of my own personal favorites and would love to hear your own ideas about what this city really needs.

Personally, I would like to see more bicycle lanes on major thoroughfares, white sand brought in for Alkai (just seeing if you were still paying attention), and possibly another major airplane manufacturer brought into the city, perhaps in place of Bellevue Square.

Expand Light Rail. Yep, I think this is a good one. It would nice to actually be a modern city and as far as I’m concerned light rail is a prerequisite.

Legalization and Taxation of marijuana. This is good for a few reasons, mostly because it would definitely help fill those empty tax coffers and partially because it would create more jobs or at least more legitimate jobs.

Nude Beach Areas for sunbathing. I think that the sunbathing part of this is the least important, but I agree that this is a good idea. If Vancouver can do it, why can’t we?

Bring Back a tenant for Key Arena. I’m not so sure about this one. It’s a good idea until of course the new tenants try to exploit the city for tons more cash and a brand new arena. We’ve got to learn our history lessons.

Make Seattle a Green Business hub. This idea means giving tax incentives to green businesses to come and hang out here, thus creating jobs, which we definitely need. The hard part is creating a balance between the incentives and the job creation.

Other suggestions include things like adding sidewalks and becoming a carbon-free city.   I never really thought of Seattle as a city without sidewalks, but of course, am not against sidewalks and in fact consider myself definitely on the pro-sidewalk side of the equation.

I say charge a toll to all

I say charge a toll to all autos driving in the downtown core at rush hour, I think buses and pedestrians should have priority at that time. Btw, I think there's a nude beach near Carkeek Park, though last I heard it was a cruising spot for gay dudes.

Pedestrians should definitely

Pedestrians should definitely have priority- that's a good idea and thanks for the info about Carkeek. As I'm not a dude, it might not be my ideal spot, but I'm sure somebody will find it useful.
